Baker Lake Sockeye
« on: July 16, 2023, 07:27:41 PM »
Talking with the fish checker it sounds steady up there but not a lot of limits. We got a little of a late start this morning got 2 of 4. Lots of season left though.

It was definitely a busy fishery today but it was fun to ogle at some boats and people watch.

What do you use for them?  Same as Lake Washington, full size dodger, short leader, bare hooks?

Bare, or with a small hoochie, or with a couple beads and a very small brined pink shrimp

Went up yesterday for the first trip of the year and killed 12 and lost 6 or 7.
Bite died at 7-7:30am. We called it at 9:30am as we had family town.

On the opener we went 15 for 25.  Limited out shortly after 8am.  Went up again last Friday morning and went 4 for 6.  Sounds like every day the bite is different.

Opener was red hot, limited and went 9 for 12. Went up again on Friday morning and only caught 3 with a handful of bites missed, most boats had a slow morning around where we fished

Red, Pink or orange hooks.  Short leaders with beeds & smiley blade or hootchie.  Some run sockeye flies or custom tied setups.  I run custom setups.  Run all this behind a single 0 dodger or smaller.  Depending on light conditions I will change up setups and dodger colors.  May change up speed or put more bend on my dodgers for more action.
Later in the season I go smaller or run a daisy chain of smaller dodgers.  Curred prawns, sand shrimp, or cocktail shrimp curred up work good and candy them up with various scents of your liking.  Slow troll.  Some have the setup, troll, depth and bait cure dialed in and do very well on the sockeye.

Ended up with 9.2 lbs off four fish. Three hens and a buck.

Anyone need crabbing bait?

If the crabbing bait is free, I'll take it.

As of today 27,853 fish have been transfered into Baker lake.  Largest return I can remember.

North end, camped at Swift Creek hit the water early and used couple different color dodgers. Dropped down about 40-50 feet slowest I could get was 1 to 1.2 with my kicker. Used small pink Hootchie with a smile blade about 8 inches behind the dodger with shrimp, and oil. One thing I heard at the boat ramp as we were leaving is guys were clipping their gear right to the down rigger ball, not sure if it makes a difference, but I was running standard salmon length from down rigger ball, 10-15 feet. Hope you get some!
